In rainy seasons, we have to experience low visibility due to smoky, foggy, wet weather. And when it’s raining, visibility from the helmet visor becomes very poor.
As roads become slippery & to keep the rain wicking off from my visor, I searched for a good solution because safety is my top priority. I found some good easy ways from my rainy riding days experience & tested several methods to keep the rain off from motorcycle helmet visor.

I will start with the method I am using right now, then will discuss additional methods. Let’s start –
A Pinlock
Pinlock visors help to clear rain splash & fog during rides. Pinlock varies from visor to visor. Before purchasing, make sure to check the helmet’s manual for more guidance. Normally, if your visor has two holes on each side, then a pin lock is mountable.
Naturally, pin-lock is an expensive one, but if it can mount, then it’s highly recommended. Usually, I don’t leave my home without a pin-lock-mounted helmet for riding.
Water Repellent Sprays
This type of sprays creates a barrier between the visor & rain/fog. This barrier keeps off the raindrops from the visor. The substances of these sprays interact with water like oils, making the visor water repellent.
The advantage of these sprays is portability. In rainy seasons, you can easily carry it with you & use it when needed. Some great water repellent sprays are – Hendlex Nano, Rain-X, Pledge & Nikwax visor proof.
Leather Cloth Cleaner
Soft leather clothes can be useful for cleaning water from the visor. Simply keep this leather cloth in your bike case for cleaning the visor in the rain. As a matter of fact, most bikers practice keeping a cleaning cloth with them while riding & it’s the least expensive method.
Winter Gloves
The name implies winter gloves but works similarly, keeping the rain off a visor. Nowadays, several companies manufacture winter gloves with a squeegee attached to the fingers of these gloves.
Wiping the visor with an open hand works but these gloves are one step up. Remove the rain droplets with gloves & see the effectiveness of these gloves practically. They are worth the penny!
Actually, some other methods are available for repelling rain from the visor that I will discuss in the later sections.
How to Defog Helmet Visor
Fog problems are scarier than rain droplets. The fogging effect happens inside the visor because of condensation. During cold weather, fog conditions get worse.
To keep the helmet visor clean & working on fog/rain conditions, there are some solutions & tricks available. Pin lock is one of them & I am using it currently. Stated below –
Coating
The anti-fog coating works great & lasts 1-2 years. There’s no hassle while applying the coating to the visor because manufacturers will do it themselves. In essence, manufacturers use various hydrophilic chemicals to eliminate fogging from the helmet visor.
Pin locks
Works great against fog conditions too. The process is inside the helmet visor; a pin-lock lens should be installed. The function of pin-locks is to keep the temp of inside & outside almost identical.
These organic silicon edges built pin-locks keep you warm during cold nights & days. As a result, condensation doesn’t happen.
Sprays
Several anti-fog sprays are getting popular day by day. A single anti-fog spray on the visor can last up to 24-72 hours.
The function of these sprays is to evaporate the water through chemical surfactant & resulting in a clear view. These spray solutions are suitable for riders who rarely ride in rainy & wet sessions.
Masks
Naturally, breathing can create fog inside the visor & wearing masks is a better way to prevent it. Foggy Masks or Bandana is designed to cover your mouth & nose to prevent the visor from getting fog up.
Another advantage of foggy masks filters pollution from entering your nose or mouth. The visor remains clean; also, breathing remains clean.
Some other easy tricks for stopping fog conditions are available, but these four solutions are the most popular & easiest ones to follow.
How to Keep Helmet Visor Clear in Rain
Here are some easy-to-follow methods while it’s raining to keep the helmet visor clear & see through it.
Turn the head
One of the old-school bikers’ methods that actually works. Simply turn your head to the right & left sides while focusing on the road.
At 30KM+ speed, rains will blow off from the visor automatically. Just choose the right road & moment.
Half Visor Open
As most of the helmet visors have the half-open option, why not use it? Generally, this is not recommended under heavy rain, but in light rain, leave the visor half-open for getting in cold air. It will prevent the fog from the condensed building.
Potato Trick
Another old-school trick was using potato slices to rub the helmet visor. This process allows water to be sucked into the potato slices and slip through the visor.
The fun part is, this trick works wonderfully, although it’s a decade-old trick.
